A little-known writer of the late 19th century, Timothy Conigrave had a few novels published in his lifetime, the most famous of which was "Timothy Conigrave Holding the Man" (1891). The book was met with accusations that it promoted hatred against immigrants, who were viewed as lesser than indigenous people by many of Conigrave's critics. The book's one-sided argument for intolerance against immigrant workers has been interpreted by many today as telling people to be intolerant towards others from certain countries. In 1892 Timothy Conigrave died from tuberculosis at the age of 37 in Australia. He was cremated and, as others were beginning to be buried, his ashes were placed in a carefully labelled jar and carried by his partner Francis McIntyre for decades after. In 1950 McIntyre's daughter asked him to box up the ashes and place them in her garage. There they remained until the death of McIntyre himself in 1970. The ashes passed to his grandson who stored them unopened in a cupboard under the stairs where they sat for over 20 years. In 1993, Timothy Conigrave's novel "Timothy Conigrave Holding the Man" was republished by Melbourne University Press with an introduction by Robert Dessaix, who set out to find out what happened to Timothy Conigrave's body. cfa1e77820
